EVENTS COORDINATOR

Role: Plan and implement signature events, recurring monthly and annual event programming and pop-up opportunities for Chamber membership, EDC Partners and community partners as defined by our Strategic Plan. 

Identifies and coordinates event sponsorship, vendors, and attendees. Works closely with Chamber staff to create strategic and effective event marketing plans.

This position also provides support to Chamber task forces, committees and to the KU Small Business Development Group.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee the planning, coordination, and implementation of all organizational events, including Annual Meeting, Golf Tournament, Taste of Lawrence Fall Mixer, Legislative Priorities Breakfast, New Member Receptions, Business After Hours, Business Expo, Small Business Resource series, Membership Luncheons and Ribbon Cuttings. Also assist in EDC events and Chamber Board events. Manage Chamber staff, volunteers, and participants’ experience from pre-event to post survey and wrap around appreciation efforts.
  • Manage event budgets designed to meet or exceed pre-determined financial goals. Solicit and negotiate bids from all suitable event locations/vendors with Membership.
  • Maintain communications with all event stakeholders (vendors, sponsors, partners, etc.) Create and maintain events in the database for online registration and payment. Maintain yearly events calendar and assist in communicating to various stakeholders with Director of Communications.
  • Provide primary staff support to the Chamber Envoy Committee (primary Chamber social group). Maintain the group’s databases.
  • Lead long-term “visioning” regarding the organization’s Strategic Plan in the area of Events management. Develop and implement effective programs. Provide training to other staff as identified to cross-train them in a back-up capability for events management.
  • Maintain and nurture personal relationships with key community leaders to shape the environment of the business community. Constantly strive to develop a clear and concise public understanding of the purpose and functions of the organization
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Competencies and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business, Marketing, Management or related-field.
  • Minimum of three years event planning experience. Prior business/fundraising experience a plus.
  • Strong ability to manage databases and related CRM software.
  • Command of Microsoft Office Suite, Canva and website management.
  • Exceptional ability to manage time and handle multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, maintains a professional and composed manner when interacting with members and community.
  • Flexible and adaptive in response to changing team needs.
  • Able to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Physical/Environmental:

  • Ability to lift 10-25 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Clear vision.
  • There is moderate noise and continual personal interaction in this working environment. Normal office environment.
  • Minimal travel.

Compensation:

Director of Economic Development  

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of Economic Development promotes job growth and investment throughout the City of Lawrence and Douglas County, KS.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships and open lines of communication with local stakeholders and economic development partners.
  • Collaborate with VP of Economic Development in business recruitment and retention projects, to include coordinating data and conducting customer service satisfaction surveys.
  • Serve as the primary contact to support and encourage startup and entrepreneurial business efforts
    • Including working with the Advisory group for the creation of the BIPOC Revolving Loan Fund and working with our partners developing and implementing the networking, training components.
    • Lead and manage the local Lawrence Metropolitan E-Community Loan Program.
  • Facilitating the coordination and alignment of workforce efforts to meet existing and prospective employers by working closely with our economic development partners.
    • Increasing awareness among Douglas County residents about career opportunities among existing workers and the future talent pipeline.
    • Assisting in helping employers develop methods to retain employees.
    • Participate in identifying workforce solutions funding opportunities.
  • Emphasis on research and data acquisition – using tools such as Chmura Economics and Analytics and Data Axle.
  • Collaborate with Director of Communications to highlight successes to numerous stakeholders in concise way. Assist with EDC website dashboard information.
  • Work with City and County economic development personnel and committees to further their Economic Development Plans.   
  • Ongoing engagement and collaboration with multiple stakeholders within the City, County, University, State of Kansas and region to generate mutual wins and create greater economic prosperity for our residents.   
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years economic development and/or business development experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, Marketing, Communications or related field(s).
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build relationships with the development community, regional and state partners, stakeholders, and others within the organization.
  • Presentation skills to present to internal and external parties.
  • Strong business development and project management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Microsoft Office products.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with entrepreneurs or startups.   
  • Chamber of Commerce experience or involvement.
  • Experience relating to and maintaining ongoing relationships with public officials or business leaders.

Work Environment:

  • Position is based in The Chamber office with continual personal interaction.
  • Position will interface with business owners, community members, and government representatives.
  • Due to the nature of the position, individual may be expected to work outside of normal office hours.
