Short Internship Experience for Japanese Exchange Students from Lawrence’s Sister City

Every spring semester for the last 25 years, students from Kanagawa University in Hiratsuka, Japan, have traveled to KU during the month of February to participate in a 4-week English language and US Culture exchange program at the University of Kansas. This year, for the first time, a small group of six of these students will stay in Lawrence an additional 3 weeks in March to participate in a short “internship experience” as part of a an intensive 3 week course on US Business Culture being taught at the Applied English Center.

The AEC is currently looking for Lawrence businesses who would be interested and able to host a student intern as part of this 3-week program from March 5- March 23, 2018. Interns will need to complete 45 hours at the internship location (approximately 3 hours a day for 3 weeks).

The overarching goal for the internship is for students to have an opportunity to immerse themselves in a real-life, significant U.S. experience, that is off-campus and outside of the traditional classroom. At the internship, we hope the students will have an opportunity to learn more in-depth about the business, shadow different employees and job responsibilities, and work on a project or task as part of their time. With that in mind, however, the student’s individual experience at each location can be tailored to best fit the needs and context of the business providing the internship.

If you are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please contact Aaron Huerter, AEC Program Manager, at aahuerter@ku.edu or 785-864-5316.
